Today’s agenda: leaf springs and shocks. Didn’t get as much time today as I would have liked. I did complete a side though. And I found something.... Interesting.

Kinja'd!!!

Do you see the difference? Theres a key problem. I’ll give you a minute

Kinja'd!!!

It’s missing a whole damn leaf. Now, let me head your questions off:

Factory is either a five-leaf “ comfort” or a four leaf “performance”. GM used the same springs from 1967 all the way through 1981, so this shouldnt be that hard

No, that bottom plate isn’t a cracked/broken/missing leaf. It is a spacer plate, with manufactured and painted corners. No evidence that it broke off.

It isn’t a lowering spring, as the spring rate is substantially lower /softer than it’s correct performance replacement.

So... These must be for a substantially lighter car. Whoever installed these was a dumbass.

Upgraded to 4 u-bolts instead of just 2. This interferes with the clips for the axle mounted brake line. Is there a good way to clamp the line to the axle to keep it from flexing? Should I just use hose clamps?

F ortunately since this had all been apart at some point it came apart again easily, with the exception of the shock which required a nut splitter. Good thing I got some kyb gas- a- just shocks, since why the hell not. I am debating doing the fronts immediately as I still need to rebuild the front suspension. I hope it doesn’t unbalance the car too bad...

I’ll see if I cant at least swap them quickly without toching the front suspension

Some performance Chryslers (mostly big blocks I believe) ca me factory with an extra leaf on the passenger side of the axle to combat lift, as the driveshaft torqued the axle, to help  keep the right tire planted, or so they thought....not sure how much it helped.

Not the case with these I'm afraid. One part number for both sides.

Whenever I can’t use the original brake line retainers, my go-to is zip-ties. ... as long as there’ s something to wrap them around, that is. Sometimes I even like to add a little piece of rubber hose, split down the side to slip over the brake line, before tightening it all down.

I mean, I would be fine with that but I’m not sure a mechanic would

What?

Oh wait, lemme guess . Some weird rule makes it a no-go for states with inspections ?

I'm not sure zip ties are consideres permanent fixtures. Perhaps if I got some of those large ones.

Yeah that would probably be good.

I hope I can get those locally though.
